Celebrating Our 45th Year in Business

Thanks for reading our prior posts regarding disaster planning, recovery and business continuity. I think it’s time to put this blog on a lighter note…if only for a post or two…..and move into a celebration!

I decided it is time to brag on the fact that we are celebrating our 45th year in business…..Wow!  What a ride it has been!!

We are very thankful to be able to still offer our ‘old-fashioned’ customer service while, at the same time, taking advantage of the newest technologies available to do all kinds of crazy things we could never have imagined even 10 years ago!!
45 years ago we answered all calls on a ‘switchboard’….remember Lily Tomlin using one? (One ringy-dingy, two ringy-dingies) If you are not old enough to have seen that, you can see a picture of one of the switchboards we used by going to the About Us/History section of our website.

Flash back to 1968: There were still plenty of rotary phones in service, but the newest telephone technology was ‘Touch Tone’ phones that had pushbuttons to speed up the dialing process. Nevermind that most times after punching in the number to be dialed you had to listen to the phone company dialing the number the regular old way!

In our world of taking and dispatching emergency messages, we hand-wrote all of the messages and then had to call around the community to locate the on-call doctor or technician….we called his home and then his mother’s home or his sister’s home (because we knew he went their every Wednesday for dinner) and we would keep calling the numbers we had until we reached the person we wanted!

The invention of the ‘beeper’ revolutionized our ability to reach people and gave the on-call person much more freedom. Of course, many times they had to go to a phone booth and use a pay phone to call us so that we could read the message to them. There was no mobile anything in those days!

Ahhh, how spoiled we are today…..or are we over-connected?!?!?!  Check back for more of our communication history in the next post!!

Towne Answering Service was established in 1968 to provide answering services for medical and commercial clients in the southeastern Pennsylvania area. Utilizing the best technology available at the time (the time was 1968 and the technology was a switchboard), Towne was able to establish a very faithful clientele, the majority of whom are still with us today. As time passed and technology advanced, so did the equipment. The answering service equipment evolved from switchboards to a basic computerized system with handwritten messages. From that, we were able to move to a fully computerized, paperless, state-of-the-art messaging system with digital lines and switching and were able to partner with our clients and provide a higher level of service.
