A Foolproof Plan to Jumpstart Your Disaster Planning

January!  Ahhh, for many of us it’s the month of ideas, lists, and a passion to get things done!

Then life happens — new business, strategic planning, staffing, marketing, training, customer service — WHAM! Sometimes even eating lunch seems out of reach, let alone having time to work on that necessary project of disaster preparedness.

You think you are unlikely to have to worry about a ‘disaster’? Some synonyms for that word are: adversity, calamity, catastrophe, mishap — a disaster does not have to be a hurricane, blizzard, or earthquake.

Here is a quick way to get lunch and jump start your disaster planning: Get off the property — go to a nearby coffee shop or café, place an order, then spend all of your time thinking about things that could happen to disrupt the way you do business. Face the dragon — don’t be afraid of these things! A mandatory evacuation because of a chemical spill? A broken leg? Someone quits? Your phone system dies? The internet goes down? A weather event that forces closure? No power to your building? Your top employee never comes back from vacation?

  • Write them all down (or type notes into your electronic notepad).
  • Form groups by how each ‘disaster’ would affect your business.
  • Think about and jot down a solution to each scenario.

Congratulations! You are already well on your way to having a plan and you even had lunch, or at least coffee! Now make a few calls and get some information as to how other people can help you. Next week go to the same place and work on more solutions; you will probably find that that one solution may be the fit for multiple problems.
